Difference between stress and depression: Nowadays, in this fast-paced life, the thing called relaxation is slipping away from human hands. There is stress in everyone’s life. Some are about job, some are about studies, some are about love. Everyone has their own reasons. Long working hours, work pressure and personal responsibilities together make a person mentally tired. But during this time we go through two things. The first is stress and the second is depression. Often people are not able to understand the difference between them. What is stress?
According to WHO, this is a process that arises due to work pressure. This cannot be called depression. It has three main symptoms. The first is lack of energy or constant fatigue, the second is distance from work and negative thinking and the third is constant decrease in energy to work. In simple words, if you no longer have the enthusiasm to work, your work seems like a burden and you repeatedly think, “I can’t do it anymore”, then it can be a sign of mental stress.
What is depression?
If the symptoms of depression are seen apart from stress, then it is a kind of mental disorder. WHO report shows that crores of people around the world are suffering from depression. This not only affects a person’s work, it ruins a person’s entire life. If we talk about its symptoms, then there are many types of symptoms, which include constant feeling of sadness or despair, loss of interest in things which used to give pleasure earlier, change in sleep and appetite, feeling guilty and sometimes the person even starts thinking of taking wrong steps when alone.
How to recognize the difference?
According to a research published in Frontiers in Psychology in 2019, if fatigue and negative thinking is mainly limited to work or responsibilities, it could be stress. But if sadness and hopelessness are affecting every aspect of life, then it could be depression. Stress can be improved by taking time and rest, but for depression you may have to meet an expert. In this research it was told that some similarities are also seen between these two. However, it is important to consider both separately, because their treatments and solutions are also different. To avoid this, you have to regularly pay attention to your mental state and if you are tired just from work, then sleep, exercise, balanced diet and take breaks from time to time. If symptoms of depression are visible, then you will have to meet an expert for this.
