Blood sugar monitoring device: Driving is an additional responsibility for diabetic patients, if they do not do so, there is a possibility of untoward incident. Fluctuations in blood sugar can affect vision, reaction time and ability to concentrate. All these things are very important for safe driving on the road. But recent research conducted in Japan has found an easy solution to this, Continuous Glucose Monitor Alerts. Let us tell you about what it is and what is its effect.
Hypoglycemia and the Risk of Driving
The biggest concern for drivers with diabetes is hypoglycemia, i.e. a very low blood sugar level. This can happen suddenly and symptoms include confusion, lack of concentration, blurred vision, weakness and even fainting, which can make driving extremely dangerous. However, there are some common ways to avoid low blood sugar, the first of which is eating food before driving or checking blood sugar in between. But research shows that most people do not follow these precautions regularly. For this reason, scientists searched for a better alternative, which led them to CGM.
What do the results say?
CGM has revolutionized diabetes management because it allows patients to monitor their blood sugar without having to do repeated finger prick tests. Many CGMs have a low-blood sugar alert feature, which warns through sound or vibration when the sugar level falls below a certain limit so that timely action can be taken. This study included 30 diabetic patients who drove at least three times a week. After that a conclusion was reached as to how it would work. During this period some things were taken into consideration, such as
- For the first four weeks he used CGMs that had alerts on.
- Then after an eight-week washout period, they used the CGM without alerts for four weeks.
Let us tell you that during this time it came to light that the alerts were set at 80 mg/dL, that is, the warning was received even before the hypoglycemia limit (70 mg/dL) was reached. Researchers say that this gave the drivers enough time to control their sugar levels by eating something immediately.
What came out in the research?
There were no traffic accidents during the study, but several participants did suffer from hypoglycemia. The difference was that 33 percent of the participants had hypoglycemia without alert. Apart from this, it happened to only 19 percent people with alert.
