For the Bihar Assembly elections, the Grand Alliance on Thursday (23 October 2025) announced the appointment of Tejashwi Yadav as the Chief Minister and VIP Chief Mukesh Sahni as the Deputy CM candidate. Shortly after this announcement, Mukesh Sahni said that he had been waiting for this moment for three and a half years. Mukesh Sahni, who was once an ally of BJP, has now been given the responsibility of sailing the alliance under the leadership of AajReddy’s Tejashwi Yadav.
Mukesh Sahni accused BJP of breaking the party
After the announcement of his name as the Deputy CM candidate, Mukesh Sahni took an oath that he would not leave the BJP until it was broken. He has accused BJP of breaking the VIP party and wooing its MLAs. He said, “BJP broke our party and broke our MLAs. At that time we had taken a pledge with Ganga water in our hands. Now the time has come. By standing strong with the Grand Alliance, we will form our government in Bihar and oust BJP from the state.”
Mukesh Sahni did not bow down before Tejashwi
The share of Nishad community in the population of Bihar is only 2.5 percent. VIP is contesting only 15 out of 243 seats in Bihar, yet Mukesh Sahni remains an important leader for the Grand Alliance. He also refused to bow down to RJD and has fielded his candidates on two such seats where Tejashwi Yadav has also given ticket to his candidate.
Why is Mukesh Sahni important for RJD and Congress?
Mukesh Sahni’s strong hold on caste mathematics and grassroots level has made him an important face in Bihar elections. His party website describes him as the son of a seafarer and says that his childhood was spent in extreme poverty and from a young age he witnessed the backwardness of the Nishad community closely.”
Born in a fishing family in Supaul district, Sahni represents a community that constitutes about 2.5 percent of Bihar’s population. It may seem left out in statistics, but politically this caste is influential and is spread in many districts along the banks of Ganga. In such a situation, by announcing the name of Mukesh Sahni as Deputy CM, the Grand Alliance is trying to strengthen its appeal among the backward and marginalized communities.
According to the report of news agency PTI, VIP was almost out of the grand alliance after expressing dissatisfaction over seat distribution. However, it was only after the intervention of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that VIP decided to remain in the grand alliance. Mukesh Sahni is considered a leader with wide influence on the voters in all the assembly constituencies.
