Childhood spent in struggle despite filmy family
Shahid Kapoor was born on 25 February 1981 in New Delhi. His father Pankaj Kapoor is a well-known name of Hindi cinema and theatre, while his mother Neelima Azeem has been a sensitive actress and trend dancer, but Shahid’s childhood was not as easy as any film story. When he was just three years old, his parents got divorced. Due to this, his life became serious from the very beginning. Shahid started living in a rented house with his mother. Less resources, emotional loneliness and unstable environment made Shahid mature before time. Later Neelima Azeem married actor Rajesh Khattar, but Shahid’s childhood was mostly spent in struggle.
Used to express himself through acting and dance
Shahid Kapoor did his early schooling from Rajhans School, Mumbai. After this he took admission in Mithibai College, Mumbai. However, along with studies, his mind was always drawn towards the stage and camera. Acting and dance were not just hobbies for her, but also became a medium to express herself. During this time, she took professional dance training from the dance institute of the country’s famous choreographer Shiamak Davar. This decision later proved to be life-changing for him.
Worked as a background dancer
Shahid was a background dancer in the films ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ and ‘Taal’. Working as a background dancer, he appeared in ad films and music videos, but the fees he received were very low. The biggest challenge was to manage the household expenses with that money and stay in Mumbai for the audition. When Shahid was going through auditions, he was not able to buy branded or good clothes. Many times, he used to borrow clothes from friends for auditions, in some auditions, he was rejected just because his look did not look like a hero. Many times Shahid had to wait for hours outside the production office for auditions. Many times he was not even called in. He says that many times, even after roaming around the whole day, he could not get a single audition.
Did not take help of father Pankaj Kapoor’s name
People think that being a star kid everything became easy for Shahid, but the reality was exactly the opposite. Shahid never took support from his father Pankaj Kapoor. He had to make his mark in the industry, so he deliberately chose a different path. When Shahid started trying for acting, his confidence wavered many times due to continuous rejections. There came a time when he felt that maybe he was not made for films, but his passion for dance and acting did not let him stop. After this he also did many music videos and now gradually he started getting recognition.
‘Ishq Vishk’ changed fate
When he got ‘Ishq Vishk’ after many years of struggle, this role also did not come easily. After a long audition process, look test and screen test, he got this film, which completely changed his life. This film was produced by Ramesh Taurani and it proved to be a dream launch for Shahid.
Had made up my mind to quit acting after 6 flop films
After the success of ‘Ishq Vishk’, it was expected that Shahid would become a star, but after the film, his films like ‘Fida’, ‘Dil Maange More’, ‘Deewane Hue Pagal’, ‘Wah! Six consecutive films like ‘Life Ho To Aisi!’, ‘Shikhar’ and ’36 China Town’ flopped. Then people started considering him as a ‘one-film wonder’. This tag broke Shahid’s confidence badly. He had made up his mind to quit acting.
Marriage became the turning point for career
In 2006, Sooraj Barjatya cast Shahid Kapoor in ‘Vivah’. This decision was surprising even for Shahid himself, because by then his career had almost sunk. The character of Prem in ‘Vivah’ proved to be a lifeline for Shahid Kapoor. The simple character, family based film and strong story created a direct connection with the audience and it proved to be a hit. After this, films like ‘Jab We Met’ gave him new heights of stardom.
Started taking risks after coming out of safe image
After ‘Vivah’ and ‘Jab We Met’, Shahid came out of his safe image and started taking risks. He surprised the critics by playing a dark and rough character in ‘Kaminey’. His tremendous performance in ‘Haider’ is considered one of the biggest achievements of his career, and he also received a National Award for it. Films like ‘Udta Punjab’, ‘Padmavat’ and ‘Kabir Singh’ proved that Shahid can adapt himself to any kind of role. Now Shahid Kapoor is making waves with the film ‘O Romeo’.
