A major attack in America was averted. The US Justice Department said on Friday (January 2) that they arrested an accused associated with the Islamic State (ISIS) in North Carolina for planning an attack on New Year’s Eve.
According to news agency AFP, US federal agents on Wednesday arrested 18-year-old Christian Sturdivant on charges of planning the attack. FBI Director Kash Patel said Friday that authorities had foiled the attack.
What did FBI Director Kash Patel say?
Patel wrote on his Facebook handle, “The FBI and its partners have foiled another possible New Year’s Eve attack by an ISIS-inspired individual. The FBI will give more information about this in a press conference soon.” A North Carolina judge has ordered him to be kept in custody until his next hearing on January 7.
How FBI agents caught the accused
FBI agents led Sturdivant to believe he was a member of the Islamic State group. The accused swore his allegiance to ISIS and revealed that he was planning to wage jihad soon. According to the US Attorney’s Office, he (the accused) described himself as a soldier of the state, which meant ISIS.
The accused was in contact with ISIS
The FBI was familiar with Sturdivant since 2022, when he was a minor. News agency AFP quoted Special Agent James Barnacle as saying that at that time he was in contact with an unidentified ISIS member through social media. However, no charges were filed at that time. Rather he was given psychological treatment. Police later got information again about his online activities.
