How Thoughts Affect Physical Health: Can our thoughts and emotions affect our health? This question has been discussed for a long time in the world of medicine and psychology. The same question was also asked to Dr. Amod Sachan, Director, Hind Cancer Institute in the Youth Conclave of ABP.

He said that I have been treating patients for the last forty years. Apart from this, we have also taught doctors. When this entire experience was looked at in detail, it came to light that the treatment we are providing is incomplete in many cases and this situation is being seen all over the world. Now people are gradually becoming aware and raising questions as to how the disease occurs. A major reason behind this is considered to be our thoughts and emotions. When our thoughts and feelings do not change for a long time, we remain stuck in the same mental traps.

How do our thoughts and emotions work, how to change them?

Dr. Amod Sachan explains that our mind works in two parts. The first is the conscious mind (which is about 5 percent in total. The second is the subconscious mind which remains active up to about 95 percent. Its specialty is that the memories of our entire lifetime are stored in it. It can be considered as a kind of data center, where audio-video recordings of our thoughts and experiences are stored.

Sometimes such dreams also come, which have no direct relation with our present life. This could be the effect of old recordings present in the subconscious mind, which get replayed again. This recording later also creates new thoughts in our conscious mind. For this reason, a person is not able to change himself easily even if he wants to.

Effect of positive and negative thoughts

Dr. Amod explains that our thoughts are of two types, positive and negative. Positive thoughts include feelings like love, compassion, kindness and goodwill, which give a feeling of happiness, peace and joy. Negative thoughts include emotions like jealousy, anger, ego and lust, which remain active continuously. Positive thoughts support the healing process inside the body and help in the production of hormones that reduce disease. At the same time, negative thoughts that persist for a long time can increase stress in the body. According to Dr. Amod, the root of negative thinking often lies in excessive craving or dissatisfaction. There is nothing wrong in working, but when work is done only out of greed, mental stress increases. It is better to do the work as a duty.

Why is it difficult to change thoughts?

Dr. Amod says that even when we decide that negative thoughts should not come in our mind, the same thoughts emerge while working. The reason for this is the fast message communication between our neurons. This message reaches from one part to another in less than a millisecond. Apart from this, our brain is also controlled by the lower brain, which is responsible for emotional reactions. The main processor of our body is the prefrontal cortex, which helps in taking thoughtful decisions. Since the lower brain becomes active first, we often react immediately, whereas it takes 1 to 2 seconds to give the correct response. Later we realize why we did it.

What is the solution?

According to Dr. Amod, the thoughts with which we are born do not change automatically. An active process is necessary to change these. For this, meditation is considered an effective method. During meditation we learn to observe our thoughts instead of letting them drift by. When we meditate repeatedly or write down our new thoughts, gradually the old patterns of the subconscious mind start changing. Doctors say that our brain cannot differentiate between real experience and imagination. That is, whatever we think again and again, the mind starts accepting it as truth. For this reason, positive thinking and imagination affect our behavior and emotions.
