Abu salem latest news: The Maharashtra government informed the Bombay High Court that the proposal for premature release of extradited criminal Abu Salem is under consideration and a decision will be taken soon. The government said in its affidavit in response to the petition of the gangster requested for release from jail that Salam has imprisoned only 19 years in jail since he was extradited from Portugal in November 2005.
The state government on Wednesday presented two affidavits in response to Salem’s petition before the bench of Justice Girish Kulkarni and Justice Advaita Sethna. In his petition filed through advocate Farhana Shah, Salem claimed that if the exemption for good behavior was included, he has already served the sentence of imprisonment for 25 years.
Government of India gave this assurance
The petition said that when Salem was extradited from Portugal, the Government of India assured that he would not be given death penalty in any case and would not be kept in jail for a period of more than 25 years. In the affidavit filed by Sugriva Dhapate, Joint Secretary of the Home Department, the state government said that the proposal for premature release of Salem is under consideration and it will be decided soon.
According to the official affidavit, Salem was extradited from Portugal in November 2005 and his actual imprisonment period was 19 years three months and 20 days till 28 February 2025. Another affidavit filed by Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General of Jail Suhas Warake states that according to the provisions of Maharashtra Jail Manuel, the proposal for the premature release of Salem was sent to the state government for approval with the opinion of the Advisory Board and the subordinate court.

Warke said in the affidavit, “The history of the petitioner Abu Salem is not good at all. He has committed many crimes in India. He then fled abroad. ”According to the affidavit, Salem has been convicted in two cases including the 1993 bomb blast case and sentenced to life imprisonment. It said that till March 2025, Salem has been imprisoned for 19 years and hence the 25 -year period has not been completed yet.
It said, “The last date for completion of 25 -year sentence of the petitioner (Salem) will be decided only after the decision on his premature release by the Home Department of the Government of Maharashtra.” The bench decided to hear the case in June.
