Before the onset of winter, get the AC professionally serviced once. In this the technician checks the filter, gas level, wiring and coils. Service is also cheaper in off-season and this helps in maintaining the health of the machine. After service, the AC gets completely cleaned from inside, due to which there is no problem in switching it on again in summer.

While covering the AC, keep in mind that the cover should be waterproof and dustproof, like non-woven fabric or leatherite. Do not install ordinary polythene or plastic covers, as they trap moisture inside, which can cause rust or bad smell. Do not tie the cover too tightly, keep it a little loose so that the air inside can circulate and moisture can come out.

Often, before switching off the AC, people forget that water remains in its pipes and trays. If this water remains stored for a long time, it can rust, bacteria can grow and it can smell. Therefore, before switching off the AC, drain out all the water and let the parts dry.

AC will not be used for about 4 to 5 months in winter. If the battery is left in the remote, it may leak and damage the remote. Therefore, remove the battery and keep it in a dry and safe place. This will keep your remote good for a long time.

Many people only clean or cover the inside unit, while the outside unit is equally important. The outdoor unit may be affected by dust, leaves, insects or rain. Therefore, clean it thoroughly and cover it. Also wipe the grill and body of the inside unit with a dry cloth.

If you are keeping the AC switched off for several months, then open its cover every few weeks and check it once. Check if there is any moisture, mold or bad smell inside. If visible, clean it immediately, dry it again and put the cover on. By taking this small step you can avoid big losses.
