Can Adulterated Ginger Garlic Paste Damage Liver: 4 thousand kg of adulterated ginger and garlic paste has been seized from Hyderabad. According to the report, Hyderabad Police conducted a surprise raid near MS Maktha Railway Gate, where they found garlic-ginger paste kept in an unhygienic manner in a container. A 21 year old youth has also been arrested in this case. What is the problem?

If the ginger-garlic paste used daily in the kitchen is adulterated, then it can become a serious threat to health. According to Deepalakshmi, registered dietitian of Sri Balaji Medical College and Hospital, Chennai, sometimes flour or cornflour is added to this paste to increase its quantity. Artificial colors and preservatives are also added to make it look fresh and preserve it for a longer period. In some cases, old or spoiled ginger-garlic is reused.

Consuming such paste can cause digestive problems like gas, acidity and diarrhea. If consumed for a long time, it can also affect the liver and kidneys. Due to chemical adulteration, allergies, skin related problems or shortness of breath can also be seen in some people. Most importantly, due to adulteration, the natural benefits of ginger-garlic like helping in digestion, reducing inflammation and ability to fight infection are reduced.

These also get adulterated

A similar case also came to light in July 2025, in which, according to food safety officials, harmful additives like titanium dioxide and monocitrate were being used in some cases. The use of such ingredients is prohibited in food production under the guidelines of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. During the investigation, a large quantity of titanium dioxide, monocitrate and turmeric powder for enhancing color was seized.

How can you test at home?

To check purity at home, keep some things in mind. The color of the paste should be light ivory, not dark or discolored. There should not be any mold, stickiness or bad smell in it. The texture should be smooth and uniform, and the aroma should be pungent like fresh ginger-garlic. The taste should not seem bitter or stale. When buying packaged products, read the ingredient list; the pure paste should mainly contain ginger and garlic; any added artificial colors or preservatives should be minimal.
