How To Identify Adulterated Milk At Home: A case of death of four people due to drinking adulterated milk has come to light in Rajamahendravaram city of Andhra Pradesh. East Godavari district administration confirmed this on Monday. According to the police and health department teams, all the deceased had drunk milk bought from the same local vendor. In the initial investigation, it has been suspected that the milk was adulterated, due to which the victims suffered from urinary incontinence i.e. anuria and serious kidney problems. Deputy Superintendent of Police Y Srikanth said that in the last two days, four people have lost their lives due to the consumption of allegedly adulterated milk supplied by illegal sellers.

Milk consumption is very high in India

Milk is a need of almost every household in India. It is used in everything from morning tea to kheer, curd and many everyday dishes. In such a situation, the growing concerns regarding the purity of milk are serious. Complaints like adding water, increasing the quantity by adding synthetic substances or other chemicals have been coming up from time to time. Food Safety and Standards Authority and experts say that adulteration in milk can be identified early through some easy home methods.

How can we identify?

Adulterated milk may look as white and fresh as pure milk, but water, detergent, starch, urea or artificial solids may be added to it. Regular consumption of such milk can affect digestion, increase pressure on organs and reduce nutritional value, making it more risky, especially for children and the elderly. First of all, to test the adulteration of water, pour a drop of milk on a clean and smooth sloping surface like a steel plate or glass. Pure milk slides down slowly and leaves a white streak behind, whereas milk mixed with water flows quickly and leaves no trace.

The method of boiling and testing the cream is also considered effective. Boil some milk and let it cool. There is usually a thin layer of cream on pure milk. If there is too much adulteration in the milk, it may foam abnormally, boil quickly or produce very little cream. To check the detergent or foam, add equal amounts of milk and water to the bottle and shake it. Pure milk forms light foam which settles quickly. If thick and long lasting foam is formed then there may be a possibility of detergent or synthetic ingredients being present in it.

To check starch, add two-three drops of iodine in boiled and cold milk. If the color turns blue then starch may have been added. To detect urea, mix milk and water in equal quantity and add red litmus paper. If it turns blue then the amount of urea may be high. If you suspect milk adulteration, always buy milk from a licensed dairy or a trusted brand and check the valid FSSAI license number on the packet. If home testing indicates any irregularities, a complaint can be lodged with the local Food Safety and Standards Authority or through the relevant app.
