Advanced neuromodulation treatment facility started in Safdarjung, treatment for depression-OCD patients will be free.


Taking a major initiative in mental health services, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital in the capital Delhi have started free neuromodulation treatment. This step has brought hope for such patients who do not get adequate benefit from conventional medicines or counseling.

Will get benefit in many serious mental diseases

The Department of Psychiatry of Safdarjung Hospital started free services equipped with modern technologies like Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), Modified Electroconvulsive Therapy (mECT) and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) on 6 December 2025. These treatments are considered especially effective for patients who do not see improvement despite medications.

New hope for these patients

According to experts, the new services can be extremely effective in many mental illnesses including severe depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), schizophrenia. Often such patients require alternative techniques along with medicine and counselling, which Safdarjung Hospital will now provide free of cost.

Government’s mental health mission will also be strengthened

The hospital management says that this initiative is not only an expansion of services, but also a concrete step towards strengthening a sensitive and equal opportunity based health system. This initiative also strengthens the efforts of the Central Government, which aim to make mental health services accessible across the country.

Financial condition will no longer be a hindrance in treatment

VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital have been working for a long time on this mission that no patient is deprived of treatment due to financial reasons. The launch of neuromodulation services further strengthens this commitment, especially for those patients who cannot afford expensive treatments.

Director Dr. Sandeep Bansal, Medical Superintendent Dr. Charu Bamba and Head of Psychiatry Department Dr. Pankaj Verma were present in the inauguration ceremony. Officials appreciated this initiative and called it a big relief step for the patients. He said that making modern, evidence-based therapy available to the public at no charge is a significant change in the mental health field.
