The United Nations has officially declared a famine in Gaza City and its surrounding areas. This is the first time that some place in West Asia is said to be famine. When is the famine declared
Three conditions are required to be fulfilled to declare the word United Nations famine.
- In which the first condition does not have enough food with at least 20% of the population of a place.
- At the same time, another condition is that in every 10,000 people, two people are dying of hunger daily, only then a famine is declared.
- Apart from this, the third condition is that more than 30 percent of the children should be malnourished at that place.
When these three conditions are fulfilled, it is assumed that starvation has now reached the situation of broader deaths. At the same time, a famine is declared at any place in such circumstances.
Ghaza’s terrible picture
According to the UN report, Gaza Governor, which is about 20% on the entire strip, has already reached the IPC Face 5 i.e. Famine confirmed level. Here more than half a million people are deprived of food medicines and drinking water. 98% of the agricultural sector of Gaza is either completely destroyed or out of reach. Apart from this, Livestock is over and there is a ban on fishing. In March 2025, Israeli completely stopped food supply in Gaza. There was some relief in May but by then the condition had deteriorated a lot.
UN warning
The UN has said that if there was no immediate ceasefire and human help is not provided to Gaza, then the number of people who died of hunger will increase manifold in the coming weeks. UN General Secretary Antonio Guterres has called it humanity failure and fully man-made disaster.
Israel’s refusal
However, Israel has rejected the United Nations report. Israel’s Foreign Ministry says that there is no famine in Gaza. There has reached a large amount of assistance in recent weeks and the prices of food items have fallen. Israel claims that this report is a document prepared under political pressure.
