Widespread strikes and protests in France on Thursday warmed the political atmosphere. Thousands of people in more than 200 cities and towns, including the capital Paris, took to the streets and opposed the policies of the government. The main demand of the protesters was that tax should be increased on the rich section instead of cutting social welfare schemes.
Performance and Eiffel Tower closed in Paris
In Paris, protesters started March with Place D’Talie. The crowd included workers, retired people and a large number of students. The effect of this protest was so widespread that the famous Eiffel Tower of Paris was also closed for tourists. The administration issued a statement saying that the operation of the memorial was affected due to the strike.
Movement led by unions
The strike was done on the call of the major unions of France. The unions clearly told the government that they should leave the budget plan of the former Prime Minister which included a proposal to ban social welfare schemes and a huge deduction in government expenditure. He argues that such steps will spoil the economic condition of the general public, especially low and middle income group. For this reason, they are constantly demanding more tax on the rich.
Pressure on new government
French Prime Minister Sebastian Lecornu has recently come to the post, but he has neither declared his entire cabinet nor presented a detailed blueprint of the budget. It is believed that the process of formation of the government will be completed in the coming days and the budget will be debated in Parliament by the end of the year. At the moment, these demonstrations have put additional pressure on the new government of Lecornu, as the public and unions are not in the mood to compromise on the cost cuts.
