Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafari Sjamsoedin is on a tour of Pakistan these days. He met Asim Munir and Air Force Chief Zaheer Sidhu on Monday (January 12). Regarding these meetings, Pakistani Army said that Indonesia has expressed its desire to increase defense relations with Pakistan in many areas. Although Pakistan has not told which weapons deal has been done, but quoting sources it has come to light that JF-17 fighter planes are being discussed in both the countries.
According to Reuters report, security officials said that Indonesia’s Defense Minister has discussed the purchase of fighter jets and killer drones with Pakistan’s Air Force Chief. Indonesia is eyeing a deal for JF-17 fighter jet. This multi-role fighter aircraft has been made jointly by Pakistan and China. Apart from this, Indonesia also wants Shahpar drone.
Indonesia wants more than 40 JF-17 jets
Quoting sources in the report, it has been said that the talks are in the advanced stage and things have been finalized on many issues. Indonesia may soon reach a deal to purchase more than 40 JF-17 jets from Pakistan. Pakistan’s Shahpar drone has been designed for surveillance and target attack. Regarding this deal worth billions of rupees, retired Air Marshal Asim Suleman told Reuters that it is in the pipeline.
Indonesian President came to Pakistan last month
There has been no talk of reaching any deal in the talks between the Indonesian Defense Ministry and the Pakistan Army. Both sides have said that they will focus on increasing bilateral defense cooperation. Let us tell you that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto also visited Pakistan last month.
Indonesia is increasing the strength of air force
Let us tell you that JF-17 has been jointly developed by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC). 58 percent of this aircraft is made in Pakistan and 42 percent in China. Pakistan is the primary seller of JF-17 aircraft. Indonesia has focused on increasing the strength of its air force in recent years. Indonesia has signed a deal for Rafale jet with France in 2022 and KAAN fighter jet with Türkiye last year.
