After the bumper victory in the 13th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has once again reiterated its demand for the extradition of ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India. BNP demanded from India that Sheikh Hasina should be sent back to Bangladesh, so that she can go there and face the charges against her and the ongoing trial.
Soon after BNP’s victory, party’s Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said that his party would formally request India to send Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh.
We are continuously making demands through legal means: Salahuddin
According to news agency PTI, senior BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed said that the Foreign Minister has already raised the issue of Sheikh Hasina’s extradition and we support it. We have been continuously demanding his extradition through all legal means. This is a matter between the foreign ministries of the two countries. We have also requested the Indian government to send him back, so that he can face trial in Bangladesh.
He said that Bangladesh wants normal and friendly relations with India as well as all its neighboring countries, but these relations should be on the basis of respect and equality. This statement of the senior BNP leader came after the statement given by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday (February 12, 2026), in which she had called the general elections held in Bangladesh a sham.
What is India’s stand on Sheikh Hasina’s extradition?
In fact, Dhaka has demanded India to hand over Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh under the bilateral extradition treaty. On this, the Ministry of External Affairs of India had said in November 2025 last year, ‘We have received the extradition request and it is being investigated as per the ongoing judicial and internal legal processes.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said in the press conference at that time, ‘We are fully committed to the welfare of the people of Bangladesh and to peace, democracy and stability there. We will continue to engage constructively with all parties in this regard.
