Diwali is the biggest and most joyous festival of India. On this day, lamps are lit in homes, sweets are distributed and people celebrate it with joy with their families. However, every year after Diwali, one problem which is continuously increasing is air pollution. The smoke and poisonous chemicals emanating from firecrackers make the morning after the festival scary.
The amount of dust, smoke and poisonous chemicals in the air becomes so high that even breathing becomes difficult. Children, elderly and already sick people are most troubled at this time. In such a situation, let us know why breathing becomes difficult after Diwali and the risk of which diseases doubles.
Why does breathing become difficult after Diwali?
After Diwali, breathing becomes difficult due to many reasons, the biggest reason of which is firecrackers. Firecrackers emit large amounts of smoke and toxic particles like PM2.5 and PM10. These particles enter the lungs with our breath, which makes breathing difficult. Apart from this, there is huge crowd in the markets on Diwali. The smoke emitted from the movement of vehicles also further pollutes the air. At this time, people burn garbage after cleaning their houses and electricity consumption also increases, which causes more pollution. Due to all this, air pollution increases rapidly after Diwali and breathing becomes difficult.
The risk of which diseases doubles after Diwali
1. Asthma and respiratory diseases increase – After Diwali, toxic particles present in the air reach the lungs, which can cause attacks in asthma patients. Sometimes it can be so serious that one has to go to the hospital.
2. Cough and throat irritation – Polluted air first affects the nose and throat. Problems of persistent cough, sore throat and burning sensation become common.
3. COPD – For those who are already suffering from this disease, the smoke of Diwali can be fatal. Problems like shortness of breath, chest tightness increase.
4. Patients recovered from Covid-19 – Diwali pollution can become a big threat for those who have suffered damage to their lungs during Covid. The fibrosis and dysfunction already present in the lungs increases further.
5. Children and the elderly are most affected – The lungs of children do not grow completely and the immunity of the elderly is low. The impact of air pollution is more serious for both groups.
6. Heart related problems – After Diwali, the risk of respiratory diseases, lung problems and heart related problems can double due to poor air quality. If precautions are not taken in time, these small problems can take the form of major diseases.
Easy and effective ways to prevent diseases after Diwali
1. Be sure to wear a mask before going out, only N95 or good quality masks can prevent toxic particles and avoid cloth masks.
2. Stay indoors during crackers or when the AQI is very poor (above 150).
