Often people consider the District Magistrate i.e. DM as the most powerful officer of the administration. From law and order to development plans in the district, many major decisions are in the hands of the DM. But very few people know that the journey of a DM does not end here. If that officer continues to progress, then in future he can also become the Chief Secretary of the state.
The Chief Secretary is the highest administrative officer of any state. He oversees the administrative work of the entire state government and along with the Chief Minister plays a role in many important decisions. But the path to reach this high position is long and full of hard work.
It takes many years to become a DM
The journey of an IAS officer begins with passing the Civil Services Examination. After selection, he is given training and then gets a chance to work on different posts. Usually, an officer gets a chance to become a District Magistrate or District Magistrate after 9 to 10 years of service. During this period, he gains administrative experience by working on many small and big posts.
When he becomes DM, he has the responsibility of the entire district. His main duties include maintaining law and order, implementing government schemes and listening to the problems of the public.

The real journey begins from DM onwards.
Even after becoming DM, an IAS officer has many promotional opportunities. With every promotion both his responsibility and experience increase. The first big promotion usually comes between 13 to 16 years of service. At this time the officer can be appointed to the post of Special Secretary, Director or any similar important post. After this, if the officer has 16 to 20 years or more experience, he can get posts like Divisional Commissioner or Joint Secretary in the Central Government. These posts are also considered very important in administration.
3rd and 4th promotion
After about 25 to 30 years of service, an officer can be made Principal Secretary. In this post, he handles the responsibility of a big department of the state government. After this, after completing about 30 to 33 years of service, the officer can get a chance to become Additional Chief Secretary or directly Chief Secretary. That is, if seen overall, to become the Chief Secretary, an IAS officer needs about 30 to 33 years of long experience and about four to five big promotions.
There is a big difference in salary also
With increasing responsibility, there is a big change in salary also. When an officer works on the post of DM, his basic salary ranges between Rs 78,800 to Rs 1,18,500. Along with this, he also gets many other benefits like dearness allowance, house allowance and traveling allowance. But when the same officer reaches the post of Chief Secretary, his basic salary directly becomes Rs 2,25,000 per month. Apart from this, he also gets many other government facilities.
