Hema Malini married Dharmendra in the year 1980 at the peak of her career. At that time Hema Malini was among the top actresses of Bollywood. There was no limit to his happiness because not only was his career going well, on the other hand he was getting love in the form of a companion. Although Dharmendra was already married and had children, still he and Hema Malini had decided to hold each other’s hands and get married. During that time something happened that trouble befell Hema Malini. She saw the worst phase of her life and even had to do B-grade films for her daughters.
Tax of Rs 1 crore was outstanding
When Hema Malini started her career, her parents Jaya Chakraborty and V.S. Ramanujam Chakraborty supported. She was giving hit films one after the other and became one of the highest-grossing actresses of the 70s. However, despite this, Hema Malini came to know in the early 1980s that she owed the government a tax of Rs 1 crore. And they will have to pay all that tax together. In those days, actors did not earn crores, so such a huge amount was too much for Hema Malini.
This has been mentioned in Hema’s biography Hema Malini: Beyond The Dream Girl, written by Ram Kamal Mukherjee. It is written in the book, ‘Dharmendra offered help, but Hema Malini did not take any help.’ Hema told in the book that despite her father’s constant reminders, her mother was very careless about paying taxes. He said, ‘My father kept reminding Amma again and again that we have to pay tax, but my mother was ignorant and felt that it was unfair to collect so much tax from us, because her daughter was earning so much money by working so hard.’

Hema had to do B-grade films
Hema Malini further told in the book that her parents often argued on this issue. Hema Malini came to know about the outstanding tax of Rs 1 crore only after the death of her father. He writes in the book, ‘Unfortunately, it was only after my father’s death that we realized that we were in dire financial straits and had to pay a lot of outstanding taxes.’ At that time Hema needed a lot of money. The only easy way to earn this money was to do more and more films because at that time the actors did not even get that much fees. But in this matter, Hema Malini had to do B-grade films, because no big banner was ready to bet on her at that time.
It was the worst period of my life,
Regarding this, Hema Malini has written in the book, ‘This was the worst phase of my life, which lasted for 10 years. I had to repay my debts and had nothing except these films. I was making my living through dance shows, but most of the money came from films only.
By the time Hema Malini had to work in B-grade films, she had become the mother of two daughters – Isha and Ahana. Isha had once told about when she came to know that mom Hema Malini was doing B-grade films. Esha Deol had said, ‘After Ahana’s birth, I realized that mom had started shooting too much. She rarely stayed at home. Later, when we watched some films like ‘Durga’, ‘Anjaam’, ‘Sitapur Ki Geeta’ and ‘Jamai Raja’, I asked her why she was doing these films. That’s when he told me about the loan.
