In Papua region of Indonesia, a strong tremor of earthquake was felt on Tuesday. Its intensity on the Richter scale has been measured at 6.3. This earthquake caused panic among the local people, but there is no threat of tsunami and no damage has been reported yet.

Earthquake center and strength
According to the National Earthquake Science Center (NCS), the center of the earthquake was 39 km below the ground. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred about 193 km north-west from the city of Abepura in Papua.

There is no threat to tsunami
After the earthquake, officials have said that there is no threat of tsunami. At present, no injuries or any kind of damage has been reported. Earlier in Indonesia, there was a 4.9 magnitude earthquake on August 7, whose center was 106 km below the ground.

Indonesia earthquake area
The Indonesia is located on the “Ring of Fire” of the Pacific Ocean, where tectonic plates collide. For this reason, earthquakes often occur here.

Earlier disastrous earthquake
In January 2021, more than 100 people were killed in a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Sulawesi. In 2018, more than 2200 people were killed in a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Palu, Sulawesi and the subsequent tsunami. In 2004, more than 1,70,000 people were killed in a 9.1 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in Ache province.

Why does an earthquake come?
The occurrence of earthquake occurs when the tectonic plates below the Earth’s surface collide, slipping. The stress accumulated between these plates is suddenly free, causing vibration in the ground, which is called earthquake. The center of the earthquake is the place where vibrations begin and the most impact on the surface of the ground is on the episode. Tectonic plates are more active in areas such as “ring of fire”, so earthquakes often occur there.
