The US has made a major change in non-immigrant visa (NIV) rules. Now all applicants will have to give visa interviews at their citizenship country or legal residence. That is, Indian citizens will now not be able to interview B1 (Business) or B2 (Tourist) Visa in countries like Thailand, Singapore or Germany to travel early.

Relief was found in Kovid-19

The wait for a visa interview in India was very long during the Kovid-19 epidemic. Many times for three years. At that time a large number of Indian applicants used to go abroad and give interviews. According to travel agents, people went to Bangkok, Singapore, Frankfurt, even Brazil and Thailand’s Chiang Mai. He used to return to India as soon as he was interviewed and got back.

Who will affect the new rule?

This change will be applicable to tourists, businesses, students, temporary workers and those who take visas to marry American citizens.

Current Visa Interview Weight Time in India

According to the US State Ministry website, the wait for NIV interview in India is at this time:

  • Hyderabad and Mumbai: 3.5 months
  • Delhi: 4.5 months
  • Kolkata: 5 months
  • Chennai: 9 months
  • Trump administration strict attitude

Visa rules are constantly being tightened in the second term of Donald Trump. The new rule has come into force from September 2 that now all NIV applicants, regardless of age (smaller than 14 years and including more than 79 years), will usually have to give a direct counselor interview.

Who will get exemption?

Some exceptions are still present. Those who have already released B1, B2 or B1/B2 visa have expired within the last 12 months and those who were 18 years or older at that time, may get exemption from interview in some cases.
