Doctors In Delhi Examine Patient In Antarctica: In today’s modern times, everything has changed and the maximum improvement has been seen in the medical field. The doctors sitting in Delhi examined the patient present in Antarctica, that too not through video call, but through live ultrasound. This demo done by the doctors of AIIMS shows that with the help of modern technology, expert treatment can now cross the distance of continents.
During the AIIMS Research Day 2026, doctors remotely controlled an ultrasound probe mounted on a robotic arm deployed at India’s Antarctic station. As soon as the probe was moved, its real-time images kept reaching Delhi. This gave the doctors such an experience as if they themselves were examining the patient while standing near him.
Trial has been done many times
This system has been tested in many trials so far. During these tests, doctors successfully conducted abdominal ultrasound, trauma scan, heart imaging, Doppler study and neck related examinations. According to officials associated with the project, despite such a long distance and difficult conditions, the image quality remained sufficient for taking clinical decisions.
What do experts say?
AIIMS Professor Dr. Chandrashekhar SH said that currently this technology is in the testing phase, but it has tremendous potential for remote and resource-poor areas. There are plans to implement its use on a larger scale in the coming times. Medical care in Antarctica is like no other place. The people working there live in extremely cold weather, completely isolated conditions and limited medical facilities. In such a situation, if a medical emergency suddenly occurs, the doctors have to immediately decide whether the patient can be treated there or he will have to be taken outside, which is sometimes not possible for days due to the weather. In such circumstances, lack of immediate testing facility can prove fatal.
AIIMS Delhi and IIT developed together
This telerobotic system has been developed in collaboration with AIIMS Delhi and IIT Delhi. There has also been cooperation in this from IHFC, National Center for Polar and Ocean Research and Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital. Doctors believe this technology can also be used in disaster-affected areas, high altitude areas, marine installations and remote rural areas of India, where access to expert treatment is often delayed or not at all.
