The Indian Air Force has got a new and experienced leadership on the very first day of the new year. Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor has taken over as the Vice Chief of Air Staff of the Indian Air Force on 1 January 2026. On this occasion he was given a formal guard of honour. His appointment is being considered an important step for the Air Force, as he has long experience, strong leadership and a record of working in many major operations.
Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor was earlier serving as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief in the South Western Air Command, Gandhinagar. During this responsibility, he took many important decisions and strengthened the preparedness of the Air Force. Under his leadership the South Western Air Command successfully faced many challenges.
Played important role in Operation Sindoor
Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor’s name has been especially associated with Operation Sindoor. His strategy and leadership during this operation were greatly appreciated. It is said that between 6 and 10 May, when the Indian Air Force carried out several precise attacks on Pakistani air bases, the role of Air Marshal Kapoor was very important. Pakistan suffered huge losses in these actions. For his outstanding contribution in Operation Sindoor, he has been awarded prestigious honors like Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal. Earlier this year, he was also awarded the Best War Service Medal.

Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor’s journey in the Air Force is almost four decades old. He joined the Indian Air Force in the fighter stream on 6 December 1986. After this he did not look back. He has studied from prestigious institutions like National Defense Academy (NDA), Defense Services Staff College and National Defense College. These institutes give opportunity only to selected military officers of the country, through which their capability can be estimated.
Air Marshal Kapoor is also a qualified flying instructor and fighter combat leader. He has more than 3400 hours of flying experience, which is considered a big achievement for any fighter pilot. He has flown different types of fighter aircraft and also given training to the youth.
Worked on many important positions
During his career, Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor has served in many important field and staff positions. He has been the commanding officer of a fighter squadron in the Central Sector. Apart from this, he also took the responsibility of Station Commander of a flying base in the Western Sector. He has also served as Air Officer Commanding of a major air base.
Before becoming Vice Chief, he was also the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Training Command. While holding this post, he played an important role in strengthening the training system of the Air Force. His special focus was on the training of young officers and pilots, so that the Air Force could be better prepared for the future.

On this post, Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor will get a basic salary of about Rs 2 lakh 25 thousand every month under Level-17.
