Delhi High Court has ordered the immediate removal of many deepfake and obscene videos and pictures of Bollywood actor Ajay Devgan. The court gave this direction on Devgan’s petition in which he had demanded protection of his personality rights and image.
Justice Manit Pritam Singh Arora in Delhi High Court said that obscene or objectionable deepfakes will not be tolerated at all and should be removed immediately. However, the court made it clear that at this stage all such posts cannot be removed which have only Devgan’s pictures or posters because many fan pages also share them. The court said that fan pages will have to be given some leeway, otherwise the actor will have to erase his own digital existence.

The lawyer appearing for actor Ajay Devgan in the Delhi High Court told the court that posters, T-shirts and caps bearing the actor’s name and pictures are being sold without permission on websites like Amazon. He mainly focused on those deepfake videos in which Devgan is shown in an obscene manner with female actresses and said that a YouTuber is also spreading such content.
The court asked whether Ajay Devgan had earlier made a formal complaint on this to YouTube. The court said that direct ex-parte order cannot be given but instructions will be given to remove obscene and deepfake content.

During the hearing in the Delhi High Court, the court also remarked that many issues have been clubbed together in the petition, which makes it difficult to understand the matter. After this, the court ordered that all objectionable deepfakes be removed immediately and the next hearing of the case will be held on 26 December. The lawyer argued that the issue of deepfakes remains a challenge for many countries of the world and the decisions of Indian courts are being monitored at the international level.
Let us tell you that Ajay Devgan has also said in his petition that deepfakes are being made using clips from his films without permission. Due to which their image is being harmed and it is a violation of their moral rights.
