Cashless Tolls: The methods of traveling on the country’s highways are changing. Another new change is going to happen in this sequence. In fact, the method of paying toll on the highway is going to change completely. The central government is preparing to stop cash payment at National Highway toll plazas from April 1. This means that now the days of hassle of standing in long queues, hesitation for change, compulsion to stop at toll booth and walk are going to go.
Under the new system, drivers will have to pay toll charges only through FASTag or UPI, which is a big step towards digital travel. The government believes that this new decision will not only save money, but will also reduce travel time and it will be easier to go somewhere.
Why are toll plazas being made cashless?
Preparations were already underway to make the toll plaza cashless. Currently, an official notification is awaited, after which it will be implemented. The purpose of this decision is to reduce the traffic jam at the toll plaza. Due to digital payment, vehicles will no longer have to stop for cash transactions or wait for change. This will also save fuel by applying brakes frequently at toll points and increasing speed. Since the payment is done digitally, a record of it will also be maintained.
And what are its benefits?
V. Umashankar, Secretary of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, says that India’s digital economy is progressing rapidly. First, the facility of payment on toll through UPI was started. People appreciated it a lot. Now the government has decided to completely ban cash payments at toll plazas. After April 1, only FASTag or UPI will be valid for payment at toll.
Concerned officials say that this change is also a step towards modernizing India’s toll system. The government is working on a barrier-free tolling model called Multi-Lane Free Flow, where vehicles can pass through toll areas at normal highway speeds without stopping. It has been said in the report that for this, efforts are being made to know the advanced technology being used in other countries.
