Posting on X, the US Embassy in India said that President Trump described India as the home of one of the world’s most ancient civilizations. The post said, ‘India is home to one of the oldest civilizations in the world. It is a wonderful country and an important strategic partner of America in the Indo-Pacific region. We have got a great friend in Prime Minister Modi.
Recent conversation between Trump and Modi
Only last week there was a phone conversation between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi. During this, both the leaders discussed ways to accelerate bilateral economic partnership. This conversation took place at a time when negotiators from India and America had completed two days of talks regarding the proposed bilateral trade agreement.
Increased expectations on trade agreement
With this proposed trade agreement, India is expected to get relief from the heavy tariffs of up to 50 percent imposed on Indian goods by the Trump administration. It is noteworthy that in August, America had increased the tariff on Indian products to 50 percent, which also included 25 percent additional duty on the purchase of Russian crude oil.
PM Modi called the talks ‘cordial’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described this conversation as ‘cordial and positive’. He said, ‘We reviewed the progress made in bilateral relations and discussed regional and international issues. India and America will continue to work together for global peace, stability and prosperity. However, PM Modi did not directly mention trade relations in his statement.
There was bitterness in relationships
It is noteworthy that after the tariff increase in August, relations between New Delhi and Washington had soured. Constant criticism of India from American officials had also affected relations.
