US President Donald Trump has recently claimed that the US Army used a weapon called Discombobulator during the operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. In an interview with the New York Post, Trump indicated that the US had used a secret weapon during the operation to arrest Maduro. Trump further said that discombobulator, I am not allowed to talk about it.
A senior US official told CNN that the President was probably referring to several different military capabilities by the same name. According to the official, the US military resorted to cyber operations to deactivate Venezuela’s early warning system and air defenses.
What did the American official tell?
The First Post report quoted a US official as saying that the US Army already has non-lethal energy systems, including Active Denial System (ADS), however, it is not clear whether ADS was used in this operation or not. ADS emits an invisible ray, which penetrates the body and creates a feeling of heat, forcing the person to step back without causing injury.
Trump also mentioned sonic weapon
While talking to a channel, Trump also mentioned the sonic weapon and said that it was used against Cuban guards protecting Maduro inside a fortified military area. Trump said that no one else has it and we have weapons that no one knows about. He further said that I believe it is better not to talk about them, but we have some very powerful weapons. That attack was very horrifying. Don’t forget that the house was situated in the middle of a fort and a military base.
What do experts say
Experts say that Directional Acoustic System like Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) is already being used by the US Army for crowd control. Another system often referred to as a sonic weapon is the Active Deterrence System (ADS). ADS can disperse people rapidly, but it does not interfere with electronic equipment. Trump had mentioned this feature in the discombobulator.
Experts say that there is no officially recognized army system named Discombobulator. Defense analysts suggest that the term may be a hybrid of cyber warfare and electronic warfare. Electronic warfare can manipulate or suppress the electromagnetic spectrum, confusing radar systems and disrupting communications. GPS and sensors are also affected. The US has a long history of implementing similar new military capabilities. Electronic warfare was used extensively during the 1991 Gulf War.
