Amidst the increasing attacks on minority Hindus in Bangladesh, another heart-wrenching case has come to light. In a village about 150 kilometers away from the capital Dhaka, Hindu businessman Khokan Chandra Das was attacked with sharp weapons and an attempt was made to burn him alive. Khokan Das, who was seriously burnt in this attack, is battling for life and death in the hospital.

We had no dispute with anyone – Khokan Das’s wife
His wife Seema Das said that she still does not understand why her husband was targeted so brutally. Seema said, ‘We had no quarrel with anyone on any issue. I don’t understand why my husband was suddenly targeted.

Attacked because of being a Hindu?
Khokan Das’s name has now joined the growing list of Hindus who have been attacked allegedly on religious grounds in Bangladesh. Seema Das said, ‘We are Hindus. We just want to live peacefully. The attackers were Muslims and the police is trying to catch the attackers. I appeal to the government for help. According to Seema Das, her husband admitted in the hospital had recognized the two attackers. For this reason the attackers poured petrol on his head and face and set him on fire.

What does Khokan Das do?
Khokan Das used to do business of medicine and mobile banking in his village. Used to drive. He was attacked while returning home after closing his shop on Wednesday. After the fire, he somehow jumped into the nearby pond, which extinguished the fire and saved his life. After this the attackers fled from the spot. Local people first took him to a nearby hospital, but when his condition became serious, the doctors referred him to a big hospital in Dhaka.

A mountain of sorrow fell on the family
Seema and Khokan Das have three children. One of the children told the mother that their father had lost a lot of blood and at least six units of blood were needed to stabilize his condition. While speaking at Dhaka Medical College, Seema Das was holding her youngest son close to her chest.

Increasing violence against minorities, India expressed concern
The interim government led by Mohammad Yunus is being accused of increasing violence against minorities including Hindus in Bangladesh. Many countries and human rights organizations including India have expressed concern over this. Last week, India had expressed deep concern over the ‘continued violence’ against minorities in Bangladesh and said it was closely monitoring the situation. The Bangladesh government says that it is committed to the protection of minorities.
