N chandrababu naidu letter to center: Amid tariff announcements by US President Donald Trump, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has written a letter to the Center seeking help for the state’s fisheries products. Naidu has requested the central government to ensure that products like shrimp are exempted from additional fees.

Andhra Pradesh is a major exporter of shrimp and fish to America. According to officials, Aqua farmer and shrimp and fish exporters work on 5 to 6 percent margin. The Trump administration has imposed a 27 percent tariff on Aqua exports from India, which will be applicable this week, besides the US Department of Commerce imposed 5.77% compensatory fee and 1.38% anti-dumping fee. This will increase the cost of exports drastically.

Chandrababu Naidu is worried about this

On the other hand, countries competing with India, especially Ecuador, face low tariffs, as the US imposes only 10 percent tariffs on the South American country. This will harm the interests of Indian aquatic farmers. To make up for new tariffs, Aqua product exporters will have to increase prices. This will make shrimp and fish more expensive than India than countries like Ecuador, Vietnam and Taiwan.

If exports decline, Indian farmers will have to reduce production. More than 5 lakh Aqua farmers work in Andhra Pradesh, most of which are in the former undivided eastern and western Godavari districts. If the state is forced to reduce production, then these farmers and their families will have to bear the brunt of it.

Number one in Andhra Pradesh production

There will be a huge decline in the prices of shrimp and fish, which will affect the profit margin of farmers. Jobs will also be affected in affiliated industries like cold storage, fish processing and packaging. Andhra Pradesh is at the forefront of the country in Aqua production. In 2023-24, it contributed 0.94 million tonnes – 76% shrimp and 24% fish – in national 1.84 million tonnes production.
