An Indian student has lost his life in a firing incident near the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto, Canada. The Indian Consulate has expressed deep sorrow on Thursday (25 December). Toronto Police said on Tuesday that an Indian student named Shivank Awasthi was killed in the shooting that took place in the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road area.
Regarding this death, the Consulate said that it is in touch with the victim’s family and is providing necessary help in coordination with the local authorities. “We deeply condole the tragic death of young Indian doctoral student Shivank Awasthi in a shooting near the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto,” the Consulate said in a post on Twitter. The Consulate is in touch with the bereaved family during this difficult time and is in constant touch with the local authorities.
What did the police officers tell?
According to the Toronto Sun report, police said that as soon as they received information about the shooting, they reached the spot and found a person injured by a bullet, who was declared dead on the spot. Police officials said that the suspects had fled from the scene before the police arrived. The premises were closed during the investigation. According to the Toronto Sun, this is the 41st murder in Toronto this year. This was the second death of an Indian due to crime in the city in a few days.
Himanshi Khurana was murdered before this
Toronto police had earlier said a 30-year-old Indian-origin woman was found dead in the city, prompting them to issue a Canada-wide arrest warrant for a suspect who was said to be known to the victim. The deceased was identified as Himanshi Khurana, a resident of Toronto. According to the police, the search is on for 32-year-old accused Abdul Ghafoori, a resident of Toronto, in this case.
