Former Australian captain Steve Waugh has given a sharp reaction on the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He says that in current cricket there is no such player whose place cannot be taken by anyone else. Whether Rohit and Virat will play the 2027 World Cup or not, it also remains a challenging topic for the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar. While batting strongly in the ODI series against Australia, both the senior players have staked their claim to play in the World Cup to be held after two years.
During a conversation with an Indian journalist, Steve Waugh said, “Players have to take responsibility and understand that no player is bigger than the game. You cannot consider yourself bigger than the game. Anyone can take your place. I believe that no player can run the game on his own terms. Ultimately, the chairman of the selection committee has to take decisions for the betterment of the team.”
Ajit Agarkar has said that legendary players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma cannot be kept on trial. But according to media reports, BCCI officials say that the team for the 2027 World Cup will be selected only on the basis of performance.
Rohit Sharma scored 202 runs in the ODI series against Australia, for which he also received the Player of the Series award. On the other hand, Virat Kohli had indicated that he is back in form by playing an inning of 74 runs in the last ODI. On the basis of this performance, he has staked claim for a place in the World Cup.
Steve Waugh further said, “I hope that the players will have a good relationship with Ajit Agarkar, but at the same time he will have to maintain proper distance from the players. It is very important to maintain coordination with the experienced players. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, what are you thinking?”
