The motion of thanks on the President’s address was passed in the Lok Sabha without the speech of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaker Om Birla expressed displeasure regarding this on Thursday (February 05, 2026). He said that yesterday Congress MPs had surrounded the PM’s chair and anything could have happened. On the Speaker’s statement, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi said what nonsense this is. PM Modi is hiding behind the speaker.
Priyanka Gandhi said, ‘PM is hiding behind the speaker. Yesterday he did not have the courage to come to the House because three women were standing in front of the bench. What nonsense is this? There is no discussion happening because the government does not want there to be discussion.
What did Om Birla say?
Regarding this incident, Speaker Om Birla said, ‘What happened in the House was like a black spot. I have received solid information that Congress MPs can do something unexpected by reaching out to the Prime Minister. If this incident had happened, it would have been highly condemnable.
The Lok Sabha Speaker further said that it was I who had requested Prime Minister Modi that he should not come to the House and he agreed to my request.
PM Modi’s speech postponed a day earlier
Actually, PM Modi was going to reply to the motion of thanks in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday (4 February 2026), but due to the uproar by the opposition women MPs, Speaker Sandhya Rai adjourned the proceedings. After this, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari had said, ‘Many women MPs of the opposition entered the well of the House and moved towards the Prime Minister’s chair. Our senior ministers repeatedly explained to them that they should go to their places because PM Modi was about to come, but they ignored them.
