Is It Safe To Reheat Food In Black Plastic: During the discussion on matters related to public interest in the Rajya Sabha on March 25, 2026, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Rajya Sabha MP Ghanshyam Tiwari expressed concern about the use of black plastic utensils in dhabas, hotels, and other places. He said that these are not ordinary plastics, they are prepared from electronic waste or other residual plastic materials. Ghanshyam Tiwari said that if hot food is kept in it, microplastic particles can get mixed in the food. Let us tell you what experts say about this.

How is it made?

According to reports, electronic waste and industrial plastic are often used in black plastic. To protect it from fire, flame retardant chemicals like DecaBDE are added. The problem is that these chemicals do not remain completely bound to the plastic and can leach into the food when heated, especially when the food is hot or oily. Apart from this, chemicals like BPA and phthalates are also found in this plastic, which are considered hormone affecting elements. When you heat food in such containers or use it repeatedly, these chemicals can gradually accumulate in the body and cause harm in the long run.

What do experts say?

In a 2024 study that analyzed more than 200 black plastic products, about 85 percent were found to contain toxic flame retardants. According to a TOI report, according to Dr Aravind Badiger, prolonged exposure to these chemicals can increase the risk of cancer. At the same time, Dr Sachin Trivedi explains that elements like BPA and phthalates not only cause hormonal disturbances, but can also increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes and reproductive problems. Apart from this, Prof. Chintamani says that microplastics released from black plastic also increase the toxic load by reaching the body, which can cause many health problems in the long run.

Which people have more problems?

Experts also warn that its effect can be more serious on children, pregnant women and people with pre-existing health conditions. Although its direct relation with cancer has not been fully proven yet, it is important to be cautious considering its chemicals. Experts recommend using glass, steel or wooden utensils instead of black plastic containers. Especially for heating food, avoiding plastic is considered the safest way.
