A horrific road accident occurred on Sunday (26 October 2025) in Misiones province, in the northeastern part of Argentina, in which at least 9 people died and more than 30 were injured. The accident occurred when a long-distance double-decker bus of Sol del Norte company collided with a Ford Focus car and fell from the bridge into the Yaza River below. The site of the accident is in the area of Campo Vieira, which is located near the city of Obera. The accident occurred when most of the passengers were in deep sleep. According to local officials, the bus was heading towards the border of Brazil and Paraguay.
Argentine police told AFP that the bus was traveling at high speed on National Highway 14 (Ruta Nacional 14) when a Ford Focus car coming from the front suddenly appeared on the bridge. The collision was so strong that the bus broke the iron barricades and fell into the Yaza river. Police sources said that the driver of the bus tried to escape, but due to the heavy vehicle he lost control. The car driver also died on the spot. A female passenger was found dead on the road and it was not clear whether she had fallen out of the vehicle during the collision or was traveling in another vehicle.
The operation lasted for several hours
Firefighters, police and health workers reached the spot immediately after the accident. Rescue workers operated for several hours to rescue the people trapped inside the bus. Misiones province government minister Marcelo Perez said that so far nine people have been confirmed dead, while dozens are injured. Meanwhile, Provincial Health Minister Hector Gonzalez said that 29 injured passengers have been sent to the hospital for treatment. Two of them are in critical condition and have been taken to advanced medical centers in the city of Posadas. That part of Ruta National 14 has been closed for the time being so that rescue operations do not face any problem.
Difficulties in identification, no list of passengers
Another big problem came to light after the accident. The bus operator company Sol del Norte did not have the complete list of passengers. Actually, this bus was an inter-provincial service, in which passengers could board or disembark anywhere along the way. For this reason, the exact figure of how many people were traveling in the bus has not been found yet. Officials said that the process of identifying some passengers is still going on. The local administration has started a helpline to contact the families of the deceased.
Accident happened on election day
This tragic accident happened on the day of Argentina’s National Legislative Assembly elections, when voting was going on across the country. According to local media reports, many passengers were returning home after voting or were going to meet their relatives. Because of this, the news of the accident shocked the entire country. Expressing condolences to the families of the victims, the government has ordered an investigation.
