There is going to be a big change in the education system of the country. Now children will connect with the world of technology from younger classes itself. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has prepared a draft to include Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the school curriculum. This course will be for students from class 3 to 12. CBSE has sent this draft to NCERT, so that the team of experts can review it and finalize it.
According to reports, after receiving the draft from CBSE, an expert committee is being formed, which will examine this draft of AI course. This committee will see what changes should be made in it and how it should be implemented according to the needs of Indian schools. After this the curriculum will be approved and then it will be implemented in schools across the country.
The School Education Department of the Ministry of Education has decided that children will be given understanding of AI and computational thinking from class 3 itself. Its objective is that children become familiar with technology and new thinking from an early age. The ministry said that the AI courses running at the international level are being studied, but the new Indian course is being prepared completely keeping in mind the education needs of the country.
Teachers are also being prepared
Not only making courses, but teachers will also be prepared for this. The Education Ministry has set a target to prepare resource material, handbooks and digital content by December 2025. When NCERT finalizes the curriculum, then training of teachers will be started before the April 2026 session, so that when the new session starts, AI teaching can be started smoothly in all schools.
So many students selected
Till now, AI is taught as an optional subject from class 8 in CBSE schools, but in state education boards, this facility is not available to all students. Now the plan is to make the option of AI subject available in every school board of the country from the next session. In 2019, CBSE introduced the subject of AI in its curriculum. In the session 2024-25, about 7.9 lakh students from 4538 schools chose AI subject in class 9th and 10th, while 50,343 students from 944 schools took it up at the senior secondary level. Now this number is expected to increase rapidly in the coming years.
What did the experts say?
According to a report by NCERT organization ‘Parakh’, only 9.52% school boards of the country have so far made skill subject compulsory, while in the remaining 90% boards it is still optional. Education experts say that in the coming times, skill subjects should also be made mandatory, so that children can acquire not only theory but also practical knowledge.
