Blindness Cure Technology: Sometimes the combination of science and technology creates such miracles, which till now we could see only in science fiction films. Scientists at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and some other medical centers in Europe have created a very small photovoltaic microchip, which can be implanted under the retina. This chip is only the size of a grain of rice, but its power is so much that with it legally blind patients have again started reading, recognizing faces and doing everyday tasks.
The name of this revolutionary technology is Prima System. It was used on 38 patients as part of an international trial, in which teams from five European countries were involved. This chip works with special glasses, in which cameras send infrared images to the eyes. The chip converts those images into electrical signals and transmits them to the brain through the optic nerve. In this way patients start recognizing letters, words and shapes again.
Trial took place on these people
Sheila Irwin, 70, who lost her center vision 30 years ago, was able to read letters on an eye chart without error for the first time since the chip. Speaking to BBC, Sheela said, “I feel as if my whole life has changed.” Initially, patients are trained to understand these images, so that the brain can learn to process new visual input.
There is no cure for every blindness
However, this technique is not a cure for all types of blindness. It primarily works on patients with advanced dry age-related macular degeneration, which till now was considered incurable. According to the report published in the New England Journal of Medicine, 84 percent of the patients gained the ability to read after the chip was implanted and their visual ability improved by up to five lines.
Dr. Mahi Mukit, an eye disease expert from London and the lead surgeon of this surgery, said that “This is the first such implant which has given patients such vision which they are able to use in their everyday life.” This technology can become a new ray of hope for millions of AMD patients around the world in the coming times. Although it is currently available only in clinical trials, it is expected that soon it will be available to common patients through health systems like NHS.
