How Artificial Womb Works: Scientists have developed a technology that can prove to be lifesaving for premature babies. Researchers from Netherlands and Germany are working on an artificial womb, which will be able to create an environment like the mother’s womb. It is called AquaWomb and it is designed to help babies who are born between 22 and 24 weeks of pregnancy, the stage where their chances of survival are extremely low. Let us tell you how it works?

How does it work?

According to reports, this system works in a transparent tank filled with liquid, which is almost the size of an aquarium and its temperature remains constant at 37.6 degrees Celsius. The baby floats and grows inside the soft double-layer membrane, while oxygen and other essentials are supplied through a synthetic placenta.

What do experts say?

“The biggest challenge is the lungs. It’s like bouncing ten burning balls at once, none of which should fall,” said Professor Frans van de Vos of Eindhoven University of Technology. That means keeping every organ stable is a very delicate process. If this experiment is successful, then artificial womb technology can bring revolutionary changes in saving the lives of premature babies. At present, such children remain dependent on ventilators and incubators, due to which there is a risk of permanent damage to their lungs.

“We don’t just want to save lives, we also want to give parents the opportunity to feel connected to their baby,” says Mirthe van der Veen, co-founder and CEO of AquaWomb. Some prototypes also include ports that allow parents to touch their baby, as well as a uterus phone that transmits the parent’s voice and heartbeat through the amniotic fluid.

What’s the problem with this?

Experts believe that this technology can also raise new ethical and emotional debates in the medical world. Professor Elizabeth Chloe Romanis of Durham University said, “This will be a new stage of human development for which there is no legal or moral definition yet.” The American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had formed a committee for the first time in 2023 to trial this technology on humans. Initially it can be tested on babies born before 24 weeks, whose chances of survival are very low with current medical methods.

American company Vitara Biomedical has raised $125 million to work on similar biobag technology, indicating that clinical trials may start soon. However, bioethics experts warn that while this technology could save millions of lives, it could also challenge traditional definitions of pregnancy and motherhood.
