Winter has started showing its anger in India. Along with this, winter has also brought many diseases. Diseases like cold, cough, body ache are the most common problems in the cold season. Older and adult people face all these diseases but small children have to face a lot of trouble. In the cold season, the risk of children suffering from problems like fever, cough, cold, blocked nose, accumulation of mucus in the throat etc. increases, which becomes a matter of biggest concern for parents.

When children at home suffer from diseases during the cold season, parents immediately start taking home or Ayurvedic remedies, the most important of which is to give steam to the children. Both Ayurveda and medical science believe that if small children fall ill due to cold, then giving steam is the most effective treatment because taking steam reduces the swelling of nose and throat, the mucus becomes thin and comes out easily and the path of breathing opens. Doctors also advise giving hot water steam to children, but parents must take some precautions while giving steam to their children.

Why should children be steamed?

In India, the only advice doctors give to reduce or prevent cold-related diseases is to take steam regularly. Steam inhalation is very beneficial in cold, sore throat and blocked nose as warm, moist air reduces swelling of the nose and throat, helps in thinning the mucus and helps in expelling it and opens the breathing passage which provides instant relief. It also provides a lot of relief from headache in winter. According to doctors, giving steam is most important for children because children are not able to explain their problems properly due to which common diseases can take a bigger form, hence it is important to give light steam to children so that children remain healthy and they also get good sleep.

How many times a day should children be steamed?

A common mistake many parents make is that they steam their children several times a day, which is absolutely wrong. Taking steam several times a day can cause problems to small children, as repeated steaming removes moisture from the throat, which can cause problems like soreness and burning sensation. You have to keep in mind that the child should be given steam only 2–3 times a day for 5 to 6 minutes and not more than that. The temperature of the steam should be normal or moderate, so that the child can easily take it. If there is no relief even after giving steam for 2-3 days, if the child shows symptoms like high fever, wheezing in the chest, very strong cough or shortness of breath, then it is important to immediately contact the pediatrician.
