As soon as Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) President Tariq Rahman assumed the post of Prime Minister, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent his son on a visit to Dhaka. Turkish President’s son Bilal Erdogan is the first foreign leader to meet Tariq Rahman in Dhaka after becoming Prime Minister. The special thing is that Abdullah Eren, Chairman of Turkish Corporation and Coordination Agency i.e. TIKA and famous footballer Mesut Ozil were also present with him.
Bilal Erdogan’s visit to Bangladesh was not officially announced in advance. This attitude of Turkey is going to trouble India as soon as Tariq Rehman takes power. India always maintained good relations with Turkey, helping it at a time when it was going through a very bad situation due to the earthquake. However, the way Turkey helped Pakistan by sending arms during Operation Sindoor, that action is like stabbing India in the back. This is the reason why this visit of Bilal Erdogan is being viewed very seriously. Even during the era of Mohammad Yunus, Turkey’s closeness with Bangladesh had increased a lot.
The main agenda of this visit was to meet Tariq Rehman. According to Bangladeshi media, there can be an in-depth discussion between the two leaders on increasing cooperation in education and health sector between Turkey and Bangladesh. Bilal Erdogan will also visit the Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar. Many people also believe that because Turkey is promoting religious groups in Bangladesh, it will visit Rohingya camps. However, Bilal Erdogan did not attend the swearing-in of Tariq Rahman on 17 February. Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Berris Ekinci had arrived from Turkey’s side. This visit of Bilal Erdogan is being considered very important diplomatically.
Some intelligence agencies have expressed apprehension that TIKA and some Turkish NGOs associated with it may promote pan-Islamist ideology. Experts believe that the growing relations between Turkey and Bangladesh could also be a broader equation of Turkey-Pakistan-China, which could be an attempt to balance India’s regional influence.
