We often see these ranks in films and news, but in real life, very few people know what their rights and responsibilities are. DCP’s powers and responsibilities
DCP takes complete command of the police in his area. The ultimate responsibility of controlling the crowd, preventing crime, maintaining security all rests on the DCP. In the commissionerate system, the Police Commissioner is the highest officer, and the DCP reports directly to him. This means that the decision of the DCP matters a lot and he has a lot of independent powers.
Where the population is more and the crime graph is bigger, the role of DCP becomes even more important. They have complete leadership of their zone or district, and officers like ACP and Inspector work under them.
Responsibility on ASP?
The post of ASP is in those districts where the commissioner system is not implemented. This rank is below SP but above DSP. The job of ASP is to assist SP (Superintendent of Police) in his daily work. He supports SP in law and order, investigation and administrative work. ASP reports every work to SP only. It is the responsibility of ASP to implement the orders given by him. Although ASP is not the head of the entire district, but many important branches of the district – like crime, traffic, Rural police are under their supervision.
Difference between the two?
DCP is held in commissionerate cities, where the police have more powers and autonomy. ASP occurs in districts where traditional police system is in place and the District Collector has a major role in administrative decisions.
DCP is considered a senior rank than ASP. ASP is subordinate to the SP, whereas DCP has only the Police Commissioner above him. DCP commands a large urban area or an entire zone. ASP only assists the SP and handles the responsibility of certain areas.
