Senior actor Govardhan Asrani alias Asrani died in Mumbai on Monday afternoon. The 84-year-old actor, best known for his memorable comedy genre and Sholay’s famous dialogue “Hum Angrez ke Zamane ke Jailer Hain”, was admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu due to respiratory problems. What caused Asrani’s death?
Confirming the news to PTI, his manager Babubhai Thiba said, “He was a little unwell. He was admitted to the hospital after having trouble breathing. Later, doctors said that water had accumulated in his lungs. He died around 3:00 pm.” Asrani was cremated the same evening at the Santa Cruz crematorium, where his close family and friends bid him farewell.

Born in Jaipur, Asrani trained at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, before starting acting in the 1960s. Asrani, who started his career in the 1960s, worked in more than 300 films in five decades. Not only comedy, he played serious roles as well as supporting roles with ease and earned a lot of name by working in films like Namak Haraam, Bawarchi, Guddi, Chup Chup Ke, Hera Pheri, Hulchul, Deewane Hue Pagal and Welcome. Asrani’s ability to keep pace with the changing cinematic times made him one of the few actors whose humor resonated with every generation.
He not only played serious roles in films like “Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar” and “Chala Murari Hero Banne”, but also directed these films.
Asrani’s role of Sholay’s ‘Jailer’ was greatly appreciated.
Asrani created a special place in Indian cinema through his tremendous humor and unique ability to make the audience laugh without losing emotional depth.
