The Central Government has taken a big step for the students of Assam and the entire Northeast India. Taking a historic decision in the field of education, on Monday, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan introduced the Indian Institute of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha. Under this bill, a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM Guwahati) will be established in Guwahati. It will be the first of Assam and the 22nd IIM of the country.
555 crore Corpus Fund
According to the government’s plan, the Center will provide a total corpus fund of Rs 555 crore from 2025-26 to 2029-30 for IIMs to be built in Guwahati. This fund will be used to meet the initial five years of needs of the institute. After five years, IIM Guwahati will have to generate its own income and will not get additional financial help from the central government.
Assam’s first IIM
Significantly, the population of Assam is more than three crore, but till now no IIM was present here. The IIM network for management education in the rest of the country is very strong, but the Northeast region was still behind in this matter. The opening of IIM in Guwahati will benefit not only Assam but the students of the entire Northeast.
Part of Assam Development Package
This project is not only related to education, but also an important part of the development package of Assam. In fact, the agreement between the Government of India, the Government of Assam and the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) included that special package would be implemented for the development of the state. Under the same agreement, the establishment of IIM in Guwahati has been considered as a project of national importance.
New energy in Northeast Education
The central government says that the opening of IIM in Guwahati will strengthen the education system of the entire North Eastern region. Students here will get high quality education of management in their own state and region, for which they had to go to other parts of the country earlier. This will promote not only education but also local employment and regional development.
Government’s intention
It is clearly stated in the bill that Assam is a state which has a large population but till now no IIM is present there. With the opening of this institute, the talents of the Northeast will get an opportunity and regional development will get a new direction. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also described it as a historic step in the Lok Sabha and said that it will contribute not only to Assam but also to the progress of the entire country.
Expectations of students and parents
After this announcement, there is enthusiasm among the students and parents of Assam and Northeast. For a long time, people here were demanding that high level educational institutions should be established in this area. Now this dream is seen to be fulfilled by the establishment of IIM Guwahati.
Local development boost
IIM Guwahati will benefit the development of not only in the education sector but also the local economy and infrastructure. New opportunities will arise for the students and teachers coming here, which will increase employment and business activities in Guwahati and surrounding areas.
