Assembly Election 2026: The Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Wednesday that the process of scrutiny of nomination papers for the 2026 assembly elections and by-elections has been completed. With this, the picture of the candidates in the major states going for elections next month has become almost clear. According to the Commission, elections are to be held in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, while by-elections will also be held in six states.
Voting is to be held in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry on April 9, for which the last date for filing nominations was March 23. After investigation, a total of 2,140 candidates are left in the election fray in these three states and one union territory.
According to the press note issued by the Commission, the scrutiny of nomination papers by the Returning Officers was completed on March 24, which was completed for all the election states and Union Territories as well as by-elections. To ensure transparency during this entire process, videography was also done in the presence of the candidates and their authorized representatives.
If we look at the states, Kerala has the maximum number of 985 candidates in the fray for 140 seats. After this, 789 candidates are contesting for 126 seats in Assam. 366 candidates are in the fray for the 30-member Puducherry Assembly.
In the by-elections, a total of 66 candidates are trying their luck on five assembly seats. Of these, there are maximum 50 candidates contesting on two seats in Karnataka, while three candidates are contesting in Goa, seven in Nagaland and six in Tripura.

The Commission said that as per the prescribed procedure, the list of valid candidates has been prepared and displayed on the notice board, and photographs of the candidates have also been put up for the convenience of the voters.
However, the final picture of the election contest will be clear only after the last date of withdrawal of nominations on March 26 at 3 pm. The Commission said that all the processes have been conducted with complete transparency and fairness as per the prescribed rules.
