Salman Rushdie Stabbing Case: The person who attacked Indian -origin British American novelist Salman Rushdie with a knife has been sentenced to 25 years in jail. In the year 2022, he was attacked by a man named Hadi Matar in America, in which he had one eye light. In February 2025, the court convicted this person from the New Jersey, who attacked Salman Rushdie several times, in an attempt to murder.
The attacker attacked with a knife by climbing on stage
Matar was convicted after two weeks of hearing at the Chautaqwa County Court in the state of Western New York. 77 -year -old Rushdie testified that he was on stage in the historic Chautaqwa Institution, when he saw a man running towards him. Recalling the incident, he said that he was stunned to see the eyes of the attacker, who was black and looked very cruel. At first he thought that he was attacked with a box, but later realized that he had been stabbed.
The attacker described Salman Rushdie as hypocritical
Before being sentenced in court, Hadi Matar stood up and said many things on freedom of expression, in which he described Rushdie as hypocritical. Hadi Matar said, “Salman Rushdie wants to disrespect other people. He wants to threaten other people and I do not agree with it.” Hadi Matar was sentenced to 25 years for attempting to kill Rushdie and 7 years for injuring another person on stage. The court said that both punishment would run together as both the victims were injured in the same incident.
Hadi Matar called himself innocent in three allegations, in which he was accused of providing material to terrorists, providing assistance to Hizbullah and being involved in terrorism near the border.
Fatwa was issued against Rushdie
The attack took place more than 35 years after Rushdie’s controversial novel The Satanic Verses were published for the first time. Inspired by the life of Prophet Muhammad, this novel created resentment among some Muslims, who considered its content to be blasphemy. After being published in 1988, this book was banned in some countries. In 1989, Iran’s supreme leader Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, ordering Muslims to kill Rushdie.
