There are many important organs in our body, but the liver is one organ which is often ignored. It works like a body cleaning factory. Its main functions are to purify the blood, remove toxins, help in digesting nutrition and storing energy. But in today’s busy lifestyle full of junk food, the liver is being affected the most.

According to the data of 2023, every year around 20 lakh people around the world lose their lives due to liver diseases i.e. 1 out of every 25 deaths is due to liver failure. And this number is continuously increasing among the youth. According to a report, about 45 lakh people in America alone have been diagnosed with liver disease. In India too, the cases of fatty liver and liver cirrhosis are continuously increasing. In such a situation, American doctor’s warning regarding liver health has also come out, so let us know what things should be avoided for liver health, otherwise liver damage is certain.

American doctor’s warning

These days, a disease is spreading very fast, whose name is Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). This disease is not caused by drinking alcohol, but by bad eating habits and bad lifestyle. According to the American Liver Foundation, one out of every four people in America is suffering from this disease. In this disease, fat gradually starts accumulating in the liver, due to which its functioning gets affected. If timely attention is not given, this disease can turn into a fatal condition like liver failure or cancer.

Till now people thought that heavy foods like ghee, butter or meat were most harmful for the liver. But Dr. Adrian Schneider, a famous functional physician from America, has a completely different opinion. He recently told in a video that the most dangerous thing for the liver is not oil or meat, but high fructose corn syrup.

What is High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)?

HFCS is a type of artificial sugar, which is usually added to processed and packaged foods for sweetness. It is especially found in cold drinks and energy drinks, cookies, cakes, candies, breakfast cereals, readymade sauces and juices, flavored yogurts. Dr. Schneider explains that HFCS converts into fat in the liver much faster than glucose, which has a direct effect on the liver.

Fructose is a natural sugar which is also found in fruits and vegetables, but artificial fructose like HFCS or packed sugar contains artificial sugar, which causes harm. When you eat this type of fructose in large amounts, it impairs gut health, reduces beneficial bacteria, stores fat in the liver, causes inflammation and damage in the liver. This is the reason why HFCS is considered most dangerous for the liver.

What to do to protect the liver?

According to the advice of Dr. Schneider and many other health experts, if you want to keep your liver healthy for a long time, then it is important for you to change some habits. Avoid things like cold drinks, packed juices, energy drinks, cakes, biscuits, candy, processed snacks, ready-made dressings, chilli sauce, tomato sauce, very sweet curd and flavored yogurt. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, eat fresh home-cooked food, drink more water, do some exercise daily, stay away from alcohol and tobacco.
