According to the report, its symptoms have been found in states like California, Florida, New York and Illinois. For the first time this case came to light in June 2025, when this infection was found in a traveler from the Netherlands. This new strain has been named Cicada because it suddenly emerged after remaining underground for a long time, just like cicada insects come out of the ground after years. Scientists say that this variant is highly mutated and 70 to 75 mutations have been found in it, which makes it different from other variants.

Its symptoms and effects
The biggest question is what are its symptoms and is it more dangerous. At present experts say that its symptoms are similar to other Covid variants. Andrew Pekosz, of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, says this variant has so many mutations that it may appear differently to the immune system. At the same time, according to epidemiologist Syra Madad, there is no concrete evidence yet that this variant is causing more serious disease.
Ability to escape antibodies
However, initial studies have revealed that this strain has the ability to escape from antibodies, which raises the question of how effective protection the vaccine will be able to provide.
