Pakistan’s star batsman Babar Azam may have been in the news for his batting form in recent times, but he has made a record in the World Test Championship (WTC) which was not in the name of any Asian batsman till now. Even Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could not achieve this.
Did this feat in WTC
Babar Azam played an innings of 23 runs in the first innings of the first Test against South Africa at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and achieved a historic milestone. With this innings he has crossed the mark of 3000 runs in the World Test Championship. Babar has so far scored 3021 runs in 37 Test matches and 67 innings, which includes 8 centuries and 18 half-centuries. This record makes him number one among Asian batsmen.
Virat and Rohit were also left behind
While Babar made this record in his name, India’s two most legendary batsmen Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could not reach this figure. Virat scored 2617 runs (46 matches) and Rohit scored 2716 runs (40 matches) in WTC. In this way Babar has left behind both his Indian giants.
Babar reached top-10
The World Test Championship started with the 2019 Ashes series and since then England’s Joe Root is the highest run-scorer batsman in this format. Root has scored 6080 runs (69 matches) so far and remains at the top.
At the same time, Babar has reached eighth place in this list. The top five batsmen include Joe Root, Steve Smith (4278), Marnus Labuschagne (4225), Ben Stokes (3616) and Travis Head (3300 runs).
From India, current captain Shubman Gill is the highest run-scorer in the WTC, who has scored 2826 runs (39 matches) so far.
Babar looking to return to form
However, Babar Azam is currently struggling with poor form. In the first innings of the first Test against South Africa, he scored 23 runs off 48 balls, which included four fours, but after a good start, he was out in the last session.
Pakistan ended the first day’s play on the score of 313/5, where Mohammad Rizwan remained at the crease scoring 62 not out and Salman Ali Agha remained at the crease scoring 52 not out.
It is noteworthy that both Babar and Rizwan were not part of the Pakistan team in Asia Cup 2025, where Pakistan lost the final to India under the captaincy of Salman Ali Aga.
