Many research has revealed that prolonged back pain in men can be a sign of prostate cancer or other serious diseases.

Back pain and cancer connection

Back pain is mostly caused by problems like muscle strain, wrong posture or slip disc. If this pain remains for weeks or months, especially at night or with numbness and tingling in the feet, it can be a symptom of prostate cancer or spinal tumor. According to Dr. Harish Verma, senior surgical oncologist at Max Hospital, Delhi, prostate cancer cases are increasing in men. If symptoms like difficulty in urine, bleeding or weight loss with back pain, then immediate check should be done. According to a study published during 2025 in The Lancet Oncology, 30 % of the prostate cancer patients saw pain in the waist or lower back pain as an early symptom. This pain occurs when cancer cells come out of the prostate gland and spread bones, especially to the spinal cord. This is called metastatic prostate cancer.

What is prostate cancer and why?

Prostate men have a small gland, which is under the bladder and in front of the rectum. This gland helps in sperm production. Prostate cancer occurs when the cells of this gland start growing uncontrollably. According to doctors, prostate cancer cases are increasing due to tobacco, alcohol and poor lifestyle in India. This danger is high in men above 50 years of age. According to a study published in Journal of Clinical Oncology (2024), prostate cancer in India is becoming the second most common cancer among men. Pollution, stress and poor lifestyle are responsible for this in cities like Delhi. If there is no timely investigation, then this cancer can spread to bones, which makes a symptom like back pain.
