The biggest thing is that with this decision, the prices of more than 900 important medicines are going to increase by 1.74 percent.

Why medicines are getting expensive

The National Drug Price Determination Authority of the government (NPPA) decides the price of required medicines every year on the basis of Wholesale Pricing Index (WPI). WPI has recorded a 1.74 percent increase for 2024, which has allowed companies to increase the price without government approval. According to NPPA, “WPI has increased by 1.74 percent in calendar year 2024, so companies can increase the retail prices of drugs at this rate.”

Which medicines will increase prices?

Antibiotics

Azithromycin (250 Mg) – Rs 11.87 per tablet

Azithromycin (500 Mg) – Rs 23.98 per tablet

Amoxicillin + Clavulanic Acid Dry Syrup – Rs 2.09 per ml

Antiviral medicines

Acyclovir (200 Mg) – Rs 7.74 per tablet

Acyclvir (400 Mg) – Rs 13.90 per tablet

Malaria medicine

Hydroxychloroquine (200 mg) – Rs 6.47 per tablet

Hydroxychloroquine (400 Mg) – 14.04 rupees per tablet

Painkiller medicines

Diclofenac – Rs 2.09 per tablet

IBUPROFEN (200 Mg) – 0.72 rupees per tablet

Ibuprofen (400 Mg) – Rs 1.22 per tablet

Diabetes medicine

Dapagliflozin + Metformin Hydrochloride + Glimepiride – Rs 12.74 per tablet

Stent prices will also increase

From April 1, the prices of coronary stents will also be increased on the basis of WPI.

Bare-Metal Stent-Rs 10,692.69

Drug-Eluting Stent-Rs 38,933.14

The common man’s pocket will affect

Increasing the price of essential medicines will affect the pockets of the general public. Especially difficulties may increase for those who are already facing inflation and health expenses. However, the government says that this price increase was necessary, so that pharmaceutical companies can continue production due to increase in costs.
