Refused to come to India
Citing security reasons, Bangladesh has requested the ICC to hold its matches in the T20 World Cup 2026 in Sri Lanka instead of India. This request came at a time when IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders had released Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from its squad due to the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. After this the tension between the two countries increased further.
‘The ball will be in Bangladesh’s court again’
Syed Ashraful Haq believes that the Indian government can offer ‘Head of State’ level security to the Bangladesh team. He said that if this happens, then the decision will be in the hands of Bangladesh whether the team comes to India or not. According to him, strong assurance can be received from India regarding security.
Danger of being out of the World Cup
Haq also warned that if Bangladesh remains firm on its decision and refuses to come to India, it may have to suffer huge losses. He said that now only one month is left in the tournament and at such a time it is very difficult to change the match venue. If ICC refuses to shift the match and Bangladesh is out of the World Cup, it will suffer a huge loss in earnings from the tournament.
According to the former official, this decision may lead to direct conflict between Bangladesh Cricket Board and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This is likely to further impact the relationship between the two boards.
Ban on IPL broadcast
Amidst the controversy, the interim government of Bangladesh has banned the telecast of the upcoming season of IPL. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued a statement saying that no concrete reason was given for Mustafizur Rahman’s exclusion from the IPL. The Bangladesh government believes that this decision is related to political and diplomatic tension.
