Bangladesh: | Visa-Free Entry Agreement Between Pakistan and Bangladesh Raised India Security Concerns

The recent visa-free agreement between Pakistan and Bangladesh has given a new direction to diplomatic equations in South Asia. Leaving behind the distance that has been going on for decades, these two countries have decided to end the need for visa for diplomatic and official passport holders. This decision took place between Pakistan Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Bangladesh Home Minister Jahangir Alam Chaudhary during the meeting held in Dhaka.

Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan in 1971 and since then there was many ups and downs in relations between the two countries. Especially when Sheikh Hasina had a government in Bangladesh, the attitude towards Pakistan was more cautious and critical, but recently the fall of Sheikh Hasina government and the arrival of an interim government has seen a rapid improvement in relations with Pakistan.

Growing faith between Islamabad and Dhaka
The agreement is considered a symbol of increasing confidence and cooperation between Islamabad and Dhaka. Especially by talking on issues like terrorism, human trafficking, internal security and police training, it is indicated that the two countries are now giving priority to strategic cooperation.

Why is India alert?
India is not considering this development as a general diplomatic agreement. Security is the biggest reason behind this. India’s concern is that by taking advantage of the visa-free facility, officers or suspected elements of Pakistan’s intelligence agencies can enter India through Bangladesh. India fears that agents of Pakistani intelligence agency like ISI may infiltrate India via Bangladesh. The internal imbalance of Bangladesh can promote terrorist activities. Anti -India organizations in Bangladesh can get indirect support. However, in the meantime, the relationship between Pakistani and Bangladesh has become stronger than before, which India is worried about.
